[PITTSFIELD, OCT. 30, 2011] The Y’s first Community Paper Shredding Event and Fundraiser was a success. Area residents and businesses came out to have their sensitive papers shredded.
Here are some fun facts about the event:
- 2,200 lbs. of paper was shredded and off-loaded for a recycling equivalent of 1.1 short tons (one short ton = 2000 lbs.)
- Saved 19 mature trees from the paper process
- Saved 7,700 gallons of water needed to process new paper
- Saved 4,510 kilowatt-hours of electricity needed to process new paper
- Saved 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
- Equivalent to 44 full boxes of office copier paper
- Saved 2.2 barrels of oil
The Y thanks Valley Green Shredding for their services and Berkshire Community College for use of the its parking lot.
All proceeds benefit the Y’s Reach Out for Youth Campaign which provides financial assistance for memberships, summer camp, youth sports and more.
